The Wizard Wears Jorts

When I first moved to Dallas, a friend of mine living there found it odd that I wore jean shorts (jorts). I'm not up on style, and I'm usually okay with looking like a total slob, but when I opened my eyes and took a look around Texas, I could not find one jort-wearing dude among the millions there. Except of course for the exceptionally creepy looking grad students who wore their prescription sunglasses indoors and at 27 were still sporting the "16-year-old-line-stache." Not wanting to look like some one who'd been scolded by Stone Phillips on a "very special episode of Dateline", I gave up the jorts. In fact I couldn't even look at my jorts anymore. They became alien, and weird. Unnatural. God did not intend for male-worn denim to stop at the knee.

And now I'm back in Oz. And every other dude and their mother is wearing jorts. In fact I went to Old Navy the other day to get a new pair of jeans and a nice pair of shorts for my trip to Mexico in a few days (NOT jorts!), and there was an entire rack... of nothing... but jorts. But even now, surrounded by jorts... they still look weird. Just can't do it anymore. No more jorts.

In other news: the apartment is pretty much unpacked. Great view of one of the campus buildings. I biked the hills today, and nearly threw up. Yeah, that brings back undergrad memories of wheezing all the way up the hill.
Can't wait to get to Juarez and see la Ardilla and her family. It's too quiet up here.

Update: "So Long Dallas"

Coming to you from la casa de los padres to give my first update in... well... a month or two.
The long and short of it is that I graduated, my brother got married, and I am in the middle of moving to Generic Midwestern State University (GMSU) to take another crack at this doctoral thing.
The good news is that I've got a stipend, and a teaching job (probably about 3 discussion groups split up from the big intro lecture that the professor teaches), which I did not have in Dallas.

The bad news is that I have to move out of Dallas which I will miss dearly. Met some wonderful people in Dallas including la Ardilla mas preciosa, the always witty and relevant Torchness (see blog to the right... other right... YOUR right), my Indian friend K (who's conversation will be sorely missed), and the list goes on.
So here are a few things I will miss about Dallas:
1) Highways that actually work in that they take you where you want to go in the city without adding another 30 minutes of driving on regular roads (not so much where I'm going).
2) One way? Psh. Optional.
3) Being passed by DPD while doing 80 mph on Highway 75. Speed limit? What speed limit?
4) The never ending assortment of awesome characters in Dallas (i.e. Papa Yella)
5) White Rock.
6) Very good memories on campus :)
7) English optional.

But my apartment keys are in, and on the 15th I'm moving to the Midwest. Dodging "tornaders" and shooting plague-ridden prairie dogs. Should be lots of fun :D
Still trying to convince la Ardilla how wonderful it is though. Muajajajaja.

Congrats to my brother and "Jumping Jayhawk" on getting hitched. Hope the vacation is going well. I've got to get back to moving.
