So its about midnight in the office and I'm working on some studying when I should be sleeping. Nice. As one of my breaks, I figured I'd float around facebook. I've been lazy as far as changing the profile because the concept has become increasingly creepy to me, but after setting a few privacy standards I'd say I'm back to hitting the "stalkbook."
Anyway, I noticed a few wall posts from some old high school friends to other old high school friends, and being the nostalgic guy I am started some facebook stalking. Something disturbing kept poking up. Especially concerning the wall posts.
Every single one of them had to do with what looked like a "drunken picture" on the profile.
These are not dumb kids, mind you. Unless you think a PhD in Chemistry, Biology, and a recent med school grad are dumb people. Granted there are times they COULD be dumb, but in general they're pretty smart. But there were these profile photos with them holding very empty bottles with very red faces. As some one who has hung out a bit too much with law students (who are maintaining their internet integrity in case the State Bar comes a-callin), maybe I'm paranoid. I figured I would count the facebook pictures of me holding a beer. So I did. Out of just over a hundred pictures of me posted by myself and others there are a grand total of 3 pictures of me holding a beer. I checked my friend's facebook profile, and out of over 600 pictures, the VAST majority had beer in them. Not just holding. Drinking, chugging, smiling with empty bottles and glasses. I know this person isn't an alchoholic, and I know they study hard and work even harder. So what is going on?
Is it cool to look like an alchoholic moron on facebook? I love this person dearly, but THAT'S the impression they're giving. I checked the other two friends, and it was similarly depressing. I'm not talking about people with lots of pictures of them at parties, or at social gatherings. I'm talking about a majority of pictures of red faces, and empty bottles. Its disturbing.
I know of five professors in the department here who are on facebook. I know that they work very closely with firms and banks across the US. I know that I would never want these people to see a picture of me in ANY kind of situation where they would think the worst. What makes people think that what they put up on facebook is not viewable by future employers? And what makes people think they'll be understanding enough to give you the benefit of the doubt?
For the good of your future, people of facebook: untag it. That's right. You can't stop your friends from posting dumb pictures of you, but you can untag it. You'd better believe that the guy sitting across from you at the interview table has access to the network, and you'd better believe that if they're interested in you they'll look it up.

I've seen stories on the news and read articles about teachers being fired for inappropriate pictures like that and they thought that their students couldn't see them. Also people have been caught in lies because coworkers find out that they weren't sick but hung over or skipping work for a concert or something. It's sad really. In one way facebook/myspace is a great tool to share and keep in contact but truly it is something that can be very dangerous and or ruin a persons opinion about you and give people the wrong idea.
LoL. Untag it?! What about "Dont do it"? ;)
